A week on Prince Edward Island, Canada

Prince Edward Island, Canada

For our last week in Canada we visited the province of Prince Edward Island.  The island is known for its potatoes that are supposed to be the best potatoes anywhere.  I do have to say that the french fries are really good!  PEI is also known for its beaches, which are beautiful and each unique.  With 683 miles of coast around the island you are never far from a beach.

Cabot Beach Provincial Park

We started our stay at Cabot Beach Provincial Park for 2 nights.  The temperature was warm and the beach was beautiful.  There were very little waves the 2 days we were here and the pups gave the beach an 5 star rating.  They did not, however, like the bath that followed.

Bucky loves swimming

Monty loves swimming and rolling in the sand

Beautiful harbor

The best fish and chips we had on the trip were at Island Stone Pub

Cavendish Beach National Park

Our next stop was Cavendish Beach Campground in Prince Edward Island National Park.  The campground had 200 sites.  The beach was a mix between rocky and sandy and we had a beautiful day relaxing on the beach.  The other days were rainy and windy so we explored the town.  Cavendish is home to the Green Gables Heritage Site, which is the home that inspired the author Lucy Maud Montgomery to write the novel Anne of Green Gables.  We toured the house and walked the grounds during our stay.

Red Rock Provincial Park

Our next stop was Red Point Provincial Park for our last 2 beach days.  Sadly, the first day it poured down rain and the second day had strong winds and a high of 65.  We walked the beach and enjoyed the view of the ocean from the campground.  We are not sure what the dogs are going to do when they go home to a boring back yard.  I expect they may go on strike.

Stairs from campground to beach

We walked around that point in the distance

Someone had written I "Heart" "PawPrint" in the sand. We had to take their picture with it.

It was a very windy day, which was blowing Bucky's fur.

This is the five hour ferry from PEI to the Magdalen Islands

Most of the beaches we have been to this summer were never busy, which was so enjoyable.

Back at the campground Bucky continued to enjoy the wind blowing his fur, while Monty entertained the campers with his ball chasing and tricks.

Charlottetown

Our last stop on PEI was Charlottetown, which is the capital of PEI.  The town started as a French military establishment in 1720.  Today, it is a vibrant town with a growing cultural district, a newly remodeled waterfront, and a growing housing market.  We took a self guided walking tour of the historic district, boardwalk, and waterfront, where we had a hard time deciding where to eat lunch.

The original name for this building is "The Bishop's Palace." It was built in 1872 by Bishop Peter McIntyre.  It was residence for the Roman Catholic Diocese.

Next to the The Bishop's Palace is the only Roman Catholic Basilica in PEI,  St. Dustan's Basilica.  The original church on this location was built in 1816, dedicated to St. Dustan. The size of the building grew through the 1800's, and after a fire, this structure was built between 1913 and 1919.  It is designated a National Historic Landmark.

All of these houses were here before 1864.

This statue is dedicated to the two John Hamilton Gray who attended Charlottetown Conference of 1864.  One John Hamilton Gray was the conservation chair of PEI and the other John Hamilton Gray was a conservative representative from New Brunswick.

Victoria Row is a pedestrian only street filled with shops and restaurants.  It is undergoing a major renovation on the other side of the street.  I'm sure this is going to be the place to visit when it is complete.

The Boardwalk is a 1.2 km loop that was built to connect the historic district to the water front.  It also has a yummy ice cream parlor that hit the spot after walking around the town.  I didn't take any pictures of the dining and shopping at the waterfront, I guess we were too busy deciding what to eat.

This ended on our tour of Prince Edward Island.  One more night and we start our trek home.  It was an amazing Canadian Adventure and we are already talking of a return to parts of Nova Scotia next year.
